The Aberdeen Test Center is the leading test and development center for the
US Army’s ordinance. Aberdeen needed a more precise method for optically
aligning 120 mm gun barrels. In the past they would hang a camera system on
the end of the barrel, but they were still unable to receive accurate data,
due to over hanging optics and having to compute algorithms because the imaging
was not concentric to the barrel.
Solution
DVF used 3D cad and completely designed a new system. The new system design
allowed the Bore Site to be inserted into the actual bore of the barrel. To
do this DVF
built in broad pad locators for concentricity, this allowed for deviations in
the actual bore. All of the imaging components were packaged inside a tube and
precise clamping forces to the broad pad locators provided the accuracy. The
end result a bore site with an accuracy of 5/16” at
1 Kilometer.
